Durable against corrosion but brittle and full of joints — and roots love those joints. Common in the valley’s oldest neighborhoods. Excellent candidate for CIPP lining, which seals every joint at once.
A wood-fiber-and-tar pipe used widely from the 1940s into the early 1980s — notably in some older valley areas. It softens, blisters, and deforms with age until it collapses. Lining a deformed Orangeburg line often isn’t viable; pipe bursting to replace it is usually the right answer.
Strong, but it corrodes from the inside. Decades of tuberculation narrow the bore and catch debris. If the wall is still sound, epoxy coating or descaling may restore it; if it’s cracking, lining or replacement is the fix.
Modern plastic lines are corrosion-proof and root-resistant. Their issues are usually installation-related — bellies from poor bedding, or settling in our expansive soils. Spot repair or lining handles localized problems.
